The adult butterfly is a bright burnt orange colour highlighted with black and white spots and black veins. These bright colours serve to ward off potential predators whilst the paler underside serves as great camouflage whilst resting against tree bark. They are found in the dry eucalypt scrubland of northern Queensland, where they live underground in burrows they dig themselves using their powerful spiny legs. They usually only venture to the surface at night to forage for food and to find a mate during the breeding season. Their food in the wild consists of dry leaves, particularly those from eucalypt trees. Unlike most other cockroaches, breeding pairs of this species care for their young in an extraordinary manner. The young (which are born live) remain at the bottom of their parents burrow for several months before venturing to the surface themselves. During this time the parents collect dry leaf litter and take it down to the youngsters, often tearing it up into smaller pieces for the young to easily feed upon. Like other insects these cockroaches grow by shedding their outer skeleton (exoskeleton). This process is called ecdysis or molting. Immediately after molting they appear almost white in colour until their new exoskeleton hardens and develops its true colour. These cockroaches are slow growing and long lived. These native Australians occur in open forests in northern Queensland and are important recyclers. Giant Burrowing Cockroaches can be bought and kept as pets for up to 7 years.

ref shop.minibeastwildlife.com.au

COMES IN RECYCLED CARDBOARD GIFT BOX

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0778/3153/6811/files/BBMR_Macroppanesthia_rhinoceros_3__94534.1533096797.1280.1280.jpg?v=1782201802
alcides-metaurus-dorsal-ventral
Alcides metaurus dorsal / ventral

SPECIES Alcides metaurus

ORIGIN Australia

FRAME 28.5x15.5xD5cm. Various races of the species are found in # Indonesia, # Papua New Guinea, # the Solomons, as well as the subspecies joesa in northern Queensland Australia. When perched, the iridescent blue is hidden by the still attractive but darker underwings. They often fly above or on the edge of the canopy, frequently along rivers and the side of the road, and are commonly attracted to gardens. As it opens and shuts its wings in flight, the flashing of it's bright blue can be seen from several hundred metres away. Its caterpillar feeds on the pretty 'Pink Evodia' tree that can be found along the roadsides.
