Specimens can grow to 8 cm. Its mouth is like a straw; it can not bite, so all it can do is suck juices from plants. In the rainforest from Mexico to Argentina where this bug is found, there are so many things that want to eat the Peanut-head Bug that it needs a lot of defenses. Scientists think that the head is supposed to imitate a lizard’s head, a complex anti-predator scheme the bug uses. The Peanut-head Bug has large spots on its underwings that look like large eyes when the bug spreads its wings. If these don’t scare away predators, the bug releases a skunk-like spray.

Other common names: Peanut bug, Peanut-headed lanternfly and Alligator bug

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0778/3153/6811/files/BBFLU_Fulgora_laternaria_1__73311.1776998416.1280.1280.jpg?v=1782196287
diesbachia-tamyris-xl-female
Diesbachia tamyris XL Female

SPECIES Diesbachia tamyris

ORIGIN Malaysia

FRAME 21.5x29.5xD5cm Made from recycled products.

DESCRIPTION Beautiful chocolate and pink colouration on this large stick insect. The reason for this is that amblypygids' first ancestral walking legs have been modified into sensory organs. These can be twice the length of the body and are used to probe the environment. They are completely harmless and do not have venom. Contrary to popular belief, these are not the most poisonous spiders in the world. In fact, a bite from a Tarantula is generally no worse than that of a sting from a bee. Tarantulas hunt their prey, which includes insects, small rodents and birds, by stalking and hunting them down. Once they insert their fangs into a victim, they release a venom which digests the insides of its prey. Once fully liquefied they then suck the remains out using their fangs in the same manner as a straw. They have a two year life cycle living and developing in the soil for a year and emerging towards the end of Winter when they feed on the nearest food plant - their preferred food is the tender leaves at the top of Eucalyptus trees. Mating is their number one priority and eggs are usually laid close to their food source.

These insects play an important ecological role.
