DESCRIPTION The Morphos are Neotropical butterflies found mostly in South America. The genus name Morpho comes from an Ancient Greek epithet, roughly "the shapely one", for Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. This male Morpho has a wingspan of up to 7.5cm and is a small but delicate member of the morpho genus. There are 29 species of Morpho. Their iridescent colouring is a result of the microscopic scales on the wings which reflect light. The underside is a dull brownish colour usually with various eyespots which deter predators when wings are closed and also provide great camouflage when perched on trees or bushes.
