DESCRIPTION AKA Christmas beetle as they are often found noisily flying around lights around December almost all of which are only found in Australia.. Beautiful metallic green winged scarab beetle which is around 28-30mm. The Anoplognathus genus has some 35 species all commonly known as Christmas beetles and come in a variety of colours from plain brown to a beautiful gold colour. They have a two year life cycle living and developing in the soil for a year and emerging towards the end of Winter when they feed on the nearest food plant - their preferred food is the tender leaves at the top of Eucalyptus trees. Mating is their number one priority and eggs are usually laid close to their food source.
These insects play an important ecological role. Since they emerge at a predictable time of the year when many reptiles, mammals and birds are producing and raising their young, adult Christmas beetles may be an important food source for many animals.
The larvae of Christmas beetles tunnel through the soil helping to aerate it and to recycle organic matter. They likely serve as a protein and fat-rich meal for hungry birds, reptiles and mammals.
Many Christmas beetles come in a variety of colours from light golden brown to the metallic green colours ( more prevalent in the far north Queensland ).
This beetle is sourced locally with permits.

Care
All frames are professionally prepared and fumigated for a minimum of six months prior to sale. While every precaution is taken, museum mites may occasionally occur.
Prevention is better than the cure! To help protect your collection, we strongly recommend placing your display in the freezer for one week each year. Regular inspection and monitoring are also recommended to help preserve your specimen for many years to come.
To minimise fading, avoid direct or reflected sunlight. Please also protect your display from extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
Glass may shatter if dropped. Hang only using the hook provided.
